Look at all the Good Habits I Have!

MY PHONE HAS GONE TO HEAVEN.
I went over to Tom’s for dinner tried to charge my cell and…nothing. I’ve discovered without a phone I don’t know what to do with my hands. I’m a little grumpy about the death of my phone and lack of willpower kicking out my long time bedfellow. (I’m talking about my computer. Not Tom). But also, it occurred to me today, that this health challenge is starting to have a positive effect on my life, that’s more than just weight loss. Over the month my habits have started to change.
I’m waking up at a reasonable time. You may recall, from earlier posts my sleep schedule is erratic. Some days I wake up at 8am, other days 2pm. And I’d go to sleep between midnight and 5am. Now, it’s finally started to even out. I go to bed at 1am. When I go to bed I’m out like a light. I’m not waking up constantly through the night. I just sleep and then wake up around 8/9am in the morning. I could contribute this new sound slumber to the lack of caffeine in my diet, but I’m going to say it’s all the vegetables I’m eating instead. I’m going back on caffeine no matter what. Four more days…four more days.
I’m also packing snacks. I was doing this a little bit during the Paleo phase and now quite a lot during the vegan phase. I’ve never packed food with me before ever. I always thought, it’d be too much of a pain in the ass. But it’s been pretty easy, I just carry an extra canvas bag with whatever meal or snacks in tupperware. It’s been good for those night I have a long train ride back to London. I can eat dinner then, instead of getting to Camden so hungry I’m ready to chew off my own arm. On nights I let myself get that hungry I always wind up settling for chips covered in cheese. Hardly the dinner of champions.
Especially being a wheat-free vegan, it can be tricky to find food. Even coming over to Tom’s house last night, I made sure I packed a green juice for breakfast, a banana, and some edamame if I needed a snack. Oh by the way, though, Tom doesn’t often stock his kitchen with vegan options, but he had me over last night to make me dinner! He made vegan chili and it was amazing. Have you ever put cinnamon in chili? Do it, it’s amazing! Also, I suggested we have rice with the chili and Tom said instead of rice, a high protein substitute is lentils. I’ve never thought of that before. You just cook them like rice and add some salt and pepper for flavor. Success. I’ve learned a lot cooking for myself but it was so nice NOT to have to do it last night. I needed the break.
I’m also more consistent with my workouts. I went on my first run in a long time and it was great. It’s been cloudy and pissing down rain the last couple of days in London but when I went running it was nothing but clear blue skies and a crisp cool wind!
As this whole project winds down I’m just trying to remind myself of all the little things I’ve gained from it. Because although the weight-loss is awesome if nothing else changes in my life, am I any healthier? I think health is more than just your jean size. It’s your outlook and habits as well. And I’m happy to report those are improving too!
