The January Challenge!
*This was originally posted January 2, 2016
It’s January 2nd. The time of year everyone goes nuts and changes their life. I know, some people find it stupid, and argue one should be bettering themselves all year round and not wait until the first of the year. But I can’t help it. I love New Years and the resolutions it brings. There’s a positive energy in the air, as people all over the world dust off their juicers and dig their running shoes out of the back of the closet. “This is it! This is when I’m really going to do it!” Inevitably, most people do fall off the wagon by February giving them the perfect excuse to eat little chocolates in huge heart shaped boxes, but that shouldn’t stop us all from trying. Should it?
This year I’m going to do something a little different. Instead of telling myself my New Years resolutions I’m going to tell YOU. And hopefully that bit of accountability makes it stick.
Here’s the thing, I don’t like my body right now. It’s gotten too squishy for my liking. My flexibility I worked so hard in Yoga class for and the stamina I built up training for a marathon last year are gone. All gone. As they say, if you don’t use it you lose it. Also, since moving to the UK, and becoming a full time comedian my diet has been less than stellar. It’s mostly the drinking. I drink alcohol nearly every night. I don’t get drunkevery night but I do have a few. I know there are studies that say drinking in moderation is actually good for you. But it’s not serving me right now, and it’s A LOT of empty calories. And it’s started to add up. As Kevin Gianni points out in his book, Kale and Coffee: Alcohol is not converted into body fat, instead your body uses it for an immediate energy source. So instead of your body using food or fat storage as energy it’s thriving on alcohol and the fat stays put. That’s one reason why I’m cutting out alcohol and a little more.
As it stands now, I’m over weight. I’m not, someone touching me lightly on the knee and saying “Maybe you should take better care of yourself.” overweight, but I’m over weight. I also, don’t like how I feel in my own body right not. It doesn’t matter if my friends tell me I look good or if I wear that dress I like wearing. I’m uncomfortable and I want to change it.
Something everyone says that I pretty much ignore is the 90% of healthy living is food. You have to eat well. I eat alright through the day, but then the evening hits and it’s all over. Then there’s whiskey and chips and chicken and halloumi wraps. So I’m doingan over haul. Within the month of January I’m going to do Three Diets.
First I will do a three day juice cleanse to hit the reset button. Then I will do 14 days of the Paleo Diet using recipes out of The Performance Paleo Cookbook by Stephanie Gaudreu. Ending with the 14 days of the 21-day vegan adventure cleanse out of Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet
. As I said earlier the juice fast is to hit the reset button. The reason why I picked Paleo and Vegan specifically is because they are’t just diets they’re life styles and I want to see which one best fits me.
- No Alchol
- Limit caffeine
- Make 90% of my meals
- Blog about it daily
- Monitor my weight and over all wellbeing
- Regularly exercise
So that’s it. That’s the plan. I’ll report back tomorrow and let you know how it’s all going. Wish me luck and have a great 2016!
