This is my final week of the Crossfit Challenge but definitely not my final week of Crossfit thank you very much. Yesterday at Crossfit Blackfriars we did a named work out, Elizabeth. Which consisted of doing Squat Cleans and Ring Dips over and over until you feel like your arms are going to fall off. I didn't go for Rx weight on the cleans. I just wasn't feeling it, so instead of biting off more than I can chew in one session, I played it safe. I did get a personal best for the clean squat later in the workout though, 55kg (121.2lbs). Then we worked on handstands which I'm not good at but I like being upside down. It just feels good.
My left hand has been hurting in lifts the past week. I somehow strained it in a session and it's been bugging me ever since. Ben, my Crossfit Coach, has a look at my form then introduced me to the Hook Grip. Something I've heard about but never applied to my work. The hook grip is a method of holding a barbell by gripping the thumb between the barbell and the remaining fingers. As I understand it; there's less strain on the forearms while lifting the bar and gives the person more power. It turned out the hook grip has a pretty cool effect because as soon as I started to use it my bar path got better. As you lift the bar is supposed to go straight up your body so you can get under the weight. I have a tendency to let the bar go away from me which causes me to fail lifts once they get to a certain weight. I find the amount of technique it takes to get a bar off the floor amazing. I understand the theory but have trouble putting it all into practice, which is incredibly frustrating.
Toward the end of class Ben, mentioned that when you do a handstand your arms are in the same position as when your in an overhead squat, which is also the position of your arms, before you do a pull up. It's all freakin' connected man! I find that piece of information reinsuring. It makes some moved I can't do yet less daunting because they're not so different than other things I can do. Except for double-unders...I still can't do double-unders. Four days left to get them. Wish me luck.
